Register a Vessel in Iowa

All motorized vessels operating on Iowa’s waterways must be registered and must be able to prove registration if asked by the Department of Natural Resource enforcement

Where to Register – Once the proper documentation is collected, the owner must appear in person at the County Recorder’s Office.

Needed to Register – If you have purchased a new boat or are a boat-owning resident of Iowa, you must register your vessel should you wish to operate a boat on Iowa waterways, legally. Provide the following information:

  • It will be most important that you complete the Application (DNR Form 542-8067). All information required will be contained inside of this form. Provide all of the required information to ensure that your application will be properly accepted.
  • A bill of sale
  • A picture ID (driver’s license or State ID)
  • Be prepared to pay all necessary registration fees
  • Once all of the proper documentation has been provided, you will be given a registration card and decals. Keep the registration card on board whenever you’re operating the vessel at any time

How To Write

Step 1 – Seller and Buyer Information – Seller and Buyer must provide the following information:

  • The Seller – 
  • Name
  • Driver’s License Number
  • Physical Address
  • City
  • State
  • AND
  • The Buyer –
  • Name
  • Driver’s License Number
  • Physical Address
  • City
  • State

Step 2 – Watercraft Details – Enter the required information required on the form as follows:

  • Make
  • Length
  • Year (the vessel was built)
  • Hull ID Number
  • Registration ID Number
  • Odometer Reading (hours)
  • Title Number
  • Will a Trailer be included with the sale? (check yes or no)
  • If the answer is Yes – Enter the Make and Year
  • Will an Outboard Motor be included with the sale? (check yes or no)
  • If the answer is Yes – Enter the Make, Year and Horsepower (HP)

Step 3 – Trade/Purchase Price – Check the applicable boxes. Provide additional information if required:

  • If the first box is checked, the seller is accepting monetary payment – Enter the worded dollar amount
  • Enter the dollar amount in numbers
  • Enter the date that the parties have agreed that payment will be made in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Provide the date in which this document will be known as, in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • If the parties agree that payment will be made at a later date, enter the agreed date in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Other – If different negotiations have been agreed upon, enter the description of the agreement (if extra room is needed add a sheet
  • Check the box if it is a gift being provided to the person receiving
  • Check the last box if this will be a trade. Enter a brief description as to the conditions of the trade (add a sheet if more space is required)

Step 4 – Seller’s Disclosure – The seller should carefully read the statements in this section:

  • If, there are any known defects enter and describe
  • If all signatories are present before a notary, the seller should move forward with provision of their signature on the “Seller’s Signature” line

Step 5 – Signatures – If all signatories are collectively before a notary public and have been identified by the notary, all parties shall provide the following:

  • The Seller –
  • Signature
  • Print Name
  • AND
  • The Buyer –
  • Signature
  • Print Name
  • AND
  • The Witness –
  • Signature
  • Print Name

Step 6 – As the notary public has completed witness of all of the signatures, they will complete the remainder of the form as required by law and affix their state seal.

  • Make copies to provide to all signatories for their records, supplying the original to the buyer
