An investment accountant provides accounting services to investment and portfolio managers. Whereas an accountant manages the accounts of individuals and companies, investment accountants work specifically for brokerage and asset management firms. This person is often responsible for managing the accounts of multiple portfolios concurrently.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitoring compliance with state laws and regulations;
  • Ensuring the accuracy of financial documents;
  • Conducting financial analyses;
  • Reconciling accounts, including cash, trades, income and dividends, special deposits, etc.;
  • Preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for portfolios;
  • Preparing tax reports for investment accounts; and
  • Conducting risk analysis assessments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field;
  • Working knowledge of accounting laws and regulations;
  • Strong analytical skills;
  • Experience in the investment sector;
  • A background in economics; and
  • A Personal Financial Specialist Certificate, Master’s degree, or CPA certification is preferred but not required.
