The Alaska Vessel Bill of Sale Form is a legal document to provide information with regard to the buyer, seller, and vessel. Registering a Boat in Alaska

New or Used Boats – Although they are not required to be titled in the state of Alaska, must be registered if they are powered watercraft of any kind that will be used within three (3) miles of shore on any body of water, no matter the size, in the state. If the boat is traveling on Alaskan waters and are from outside of the state, they must be registered in the state where they are from. Any non-powered flotation device or vehicle, such as a seaplane, a ship’s lifeboat, are not required to be registered, nor is any boat belonging to the Federal or State Governments.

Where to Register a Boat – You may register your boat at any local DMV office.

To Register a Boat in Alaska – You must go to your local DMV office and submit the following:

  • Boat Registration Application (Form 841)
  • Be prepared to pay your fees of $24.00 for powered boats or $10.00 for non-powered boats
  • Proof of ownership must be one of the following documents:
  • Affidavit of Ownership (Form 848)
  • OR A bill of sale from the dealer or previous owner
  • OR A carpenter’s certificate
  • OR A title or registration from a previous state if you will be residing inside of the state of Alaska

Registration will last for 3 years and will expire at the end of the same month of your initial registration

  • State

Step 3 – Vessel Details – This section will provide all of the information with regard to the vessel being sold. Enter the following vessel information on the form, as follows:

  • Make
  • Length
  • Year
  • Hull ID Number
  • Registration
  • Odometer (Hours)
  • Title Number
  • Will a Trailer be included in this sale? (check yes or no appropriately)
  • If your answer is “yes,” enter the make and year of the trailer
  • Will an Outboard Motor be included in this sale? (check yes or no)
  • If your answer is “yes,” enter the number of outboard motors
  • Make
  • Year
  • Horse Power (HP)
  • Review your information for accuracy
  • Once payment has been received, hand the document to your seller
