An internship letter of intent is an application to inquire about an unpaid position with an organization to gain on-the-job experience.

It should include qualifications, relevant experiences, and career goals, underscoring how an internship opportunity with the organization could be mutually beneficial.

Letter of Intent vs. Cover Letter

A cover letter is submitted in response to an available internship opening within the established timeline. In contrast, a letter of intent is used to convey a general interest in interning for the company and can be submitted anytime.

Both documents must illustrate relevant skills and experiences and provide context for the applicant’s resume.

Common Internship Types

  • Dietic
  • Engineering
  • Finance
  • Medical
  • Pharmacy
  • Summer
  • Veterinary

Doris Acosta
Editor-in-Chief
Food & Nutrition Magazine

Dear Ms. Acosta,

My name is Jane Doe, and I am a third-year undergrad student at the University of Southern California double majoring in food science and multimedia journalism. I am writing to express my sincere interest in interning with your magazine, Food & Nutrition. I grew up reading your magazine alongside my grandmother, who first sparked my interest in the science behind food. My goal is combine my two passions—food and multimedia journalism—and I believe that your publication is at the forefront of this intersection.

As a student at USC, I have maintained an average GPA of 3.8 and received a scholarship for my academic performance. Last summer, I interned at the LA Times’ food section, assisting with writing and publishing online content and researching story ideas. At this internship, I introduced the idea of incorporating more multimedia elements to their website, such as photo slideshows, short videos, and interactive graphics, to help engage the readership and extend the time spent on the website. I also became very familiar with WordPress as a content management system and was able to utilize some of the skills I learned in school, such as creating graphics, writing clean copy on deadline, and more. I believe that I can contribute these skills to your publication and learn a lot from your team as well.

I am passionate about spreading little-known information about the food industry and helping people understand the impact that different foods have on their bodies. With my experience, I truly believe that I can contribute something new to the Food & Nutrition Magazine. If you are willing, I would be glad to speak with you further about any potential internship opportunities.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Dr. Samuel Azab
Broadway Pet Clinic
1058 E. Broadway Long Beach, CA 90802

Dear Dr. Azab,

My name is John, and I am writing to express my interest in an internship opportunity with your clinic. As a recent grad applying to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program at Cal State University of Long Beach, I believe that interning with your clinic can provide me with a great learning experience, and I trust that my passion for veterinary medicine, my proven work ethic, and my varied experiences in the field would serve you and your team as well.

As a lifelong animal lover, I have volunteered at local shelters since I was a young child. This experience taught me how to effectively work with all different types of personalities, in both the animals and their owners. It also taught me to work independently and be able to think quickly on my feet. Ultimately, these experiences jumpstarted my desire to become a veterinarian. I graduated this past year from CSULB with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and a minor in animal physiology. Last summer, I interned with Dr. Blake Smith’s veterinarian hospital in Los Angeles, assisting with surgery preparations, taking the patient’s stats, and filing paperwork. Wearing multiple hats as an intern allowed me to learn about all the facets of this business, and I hope to bring some of this experience under your guidance at Broadway Pet Clinic.

Thank you so much for your consideration. I am available anytime to meet with you and speak further about a potential internship opportunity.

Sincerely,

John Doe
