A teacher’s letter of intent to return is a document that a teacher sends to their school district to inform them of their intention to return in the next school year. The Education Code requires that elementary and secondary school teachers send a letter of intent stating whether they plan to continue teaching in the same district after summer vacation and if they wish to be transferred to another teaching position, department, or classroom.

In the event that the teacher wishes to be transferred, they will need to provide a list of relevant experience and training that supports their request. If the teacher is continuing in the same position, they only need to state this fact and provide their contact info. The letter of intent must be sent to the district in advance of the summer vacation; otherwise, they may be deemed to have declined employment and be terminated by the end of the current school year.

What Does a Teacher Do?

A teacher’s job is to educate their students, ensuring that by the end of the school year, they have demonstrably learned a variety of new information and are prepared for the next school year. A teacher’s day-to-day tasks consist of monitoring their students, taking attendance, maintaining their classroom, creating a class curriculum, as well as assigning and grading schoolwork.

Most teachers are specialized in a particular subject, such as science, literature, or physical education but may be called upon to teach a wide variety of subjects. Teacher education requirements vary across state lines and according to the grade level being taught.

All states require each teacher to obtain a bachelor’s degree and state teaching certificate to be qualified; however, certain specialized positions will also require a master’s degree. Every school year, teachers must readapt their lesson plans and methods to meet their new student’s needs. Furthermore, they will need to ensure that their assigned work meets the mandated curriculum and that their class meets desired learning outcomes.

Dear Dr. Jessa Remmington,

I, Edward James, am writing this Letter of Intent to notify the district that I am planning to continue teaching for the 2020-2021 school year but would like to request a transfer to the Science department.

I believe that I will be an ideal candidate for this position due to my experience teaching Physics I and II at Beachview Highschool in New Haven from 2015 to 2018. During my three years of teaching these classes, I developed several in-class lab experiments drawing from my physics training and lab experience. Student engagement in these activities was remarkable and, I believe, helped to contribute to high in-class grade averages.

The following degrees and extracurricular activities qualify me for this position:

  • Masters Degree in Physics from the University of Arizona
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science from Johns Hopkins University
  • Physics Intern for Space Instrument Development at Pioneer Astronautics
  • 8 years as an Accredited Tutor in the subjects of Science and Mathematics

Please contact me at 555-617-8222 or ejames@gmail.com if you have any questions regarding my transfer request. I appreciate your time and consideration in reviewing this letter.

Sincerely,
