A Pet Photo Release Form is a written authorization to take photographs of a dog, cat, or other domestic animal. Though the pet in question is unlikely to take issue with being photographed, its owner might on its behalf – so make sure to get the owner’s signature before taking or distributing any images.

What to Include

Like any other release, this one should explain the scope of the permission that is being given. Generally, a Pet Photo Release grants the photographer an enduring license to take photographs of the named pet, and the right to use or distribute these photographs at will.

The release should include:

  • The name of the pet
  • The name of the owner
  • A signature from the owner

The release takes effect once signed and dated. Remember that this is a voluntary form, and that permission can be revoked at any time.

1. Locate the owner

It goes without saying that animals have rights too. Respect these by treating all pets with dignity.

Once you have obtained the owner’s signature, retain the release for your records. Remember that the owner may request a copy too, so bring extras along whenever you will be taking photos.
