Privately Selling a Firearm

Any Mississippi resident who can own and purchase a firearm by state law can also sell a firearm to another permitted person.

Prohibited from Buying

Under state law,[1] it is unlawful for any person who has been convicted of a felony under the laws of this state, any other state, or of the United States to possess any firearm or any bowie knife, dirk knife, butcher knife, switchblade knife, metallic knuckles, blackjack, or any muffler or silencer for any firearm unless such person has received a pardon for such felony, has received a relief from disability,[2] or has received a certificate of rehabilitation.[3]

Registering a Firearm

Mississippi has no statutes requiring residents to register their firearms with the state.

Concealed Carry

Generally, concealed carry without a license is legal for anyone who can legally own a firearm. Specific forms of concealed carry, such as holster-less or ankle-holstered, require a Firearm Permit issued by the state Firearm Permit Division.

How to Apply

An applicant must be at least 21 to apply for a firearm permit or 18 years old if they are active-duty military and a permanent resident of Mississippi.[4]

  1. Complete a weapons safety and training course that the Board approves of Law Enforcement Standards and Training.[5]
  2. Complete an Individual Firearm Permit Application.
  3. Produce two current forms of identification.
  4. First-time applicants submit their applications in person and subject to fingerprinting at the Department of Public Safety Headquarters in Jackson or a Firearm Permit Division office in Batesville, Biloxi, Brookhaven, Greenwood, Hattiesburg, Meridian, New Albany, Pearl, or Starkville.
  5. Pay the appropriate application fee.[6]
  6. The issuing authority will approve or deny an application within 45 days of receiving the application.

Reciprocity

Since Mississippi is a permitless carry state, it recognizes concealed carry permits from all states.[7]
