The Delaware Vehicle Bill of Sale is a legal document that is provided by a seller to a buyer/trader to prove the purchase or trade of a motor vehicle. This document will prove that a legal transaction has taken place, between whom and will prove, also, transfer of ownership. This document will be required for registration of a vehicle in the state. This document will require notarization, therefore, no signatures should be entered without being identified by a notary and having the notary public witness signing by all parties.

Any vehicle requiring registration must be registered with the state within 30 days of purchase or change of residence to the state of DE.

Needed to Register a Vehicle – If a vehicle is purchased from a dealership, it’s customary for the dealership to provide the registration services for you. Check with whomever you may be interested in purchasing from, to see if they do, in fact offer this service. Otherwise, you will require the following documentation:

  • An emissions/Safety Inspection document
  • Auto Insurance purchased from a licensed agent in the state of Delaware
  • A title that has transferred ownership to you and a bill of sale
  • A picture ID
  • Be prepared to pay all registration fees

How To Write

Step 1 – Seller and Buyer Information – Enter the following:

Step 2 – Vehicle Details – Enter the details of the vehicle being sold or traded in the spaces provided on the form, as follows:

  • Make
  • Type/Model
  • Year
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • Color
  • Odometer Reading in Miles
  • Will the title be included in this sale (Check Yes or No)

Step 3 – Trade/Purchase Price – Check the boxes that apply with regard to this transaction and offer additional information if required:

  • If the first box is checked, the seller will be accepting monetary payment, enter the dollar amount in words
  • Enter the dollar amount in numbers
  • Specify the date when the parties have agreed that payment will be made mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Enter the date in which the document will be known as in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • If both parties agree that payment will be made at a later date, enter that date mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Other – If other negotiations have been agreed upon by the parties, enter a brief description of the negotiations (if extra room is needed add a sheet and attach it to the form
  • Check the box if the item(s) are being provided as a gift to the “buyer”
  • The last box in this section will address a trade as opposed to monetary transaction. Enter a brief description of the conditions of the trade

Step 4 – Buyer’s Disclosure – The buyer must read all of the statements in this section.

  • If the buyer agrees then, the buyer must provide signature, but only once all parties are present before a notary

Step 5 – Seller’s Disclosure – The seller must carefully review the statements in this section

  • If the buyer agrees then, the buyer must provide signature, but only once all parties are present before a notary

Step 6 – Signatures – The seller, buyer, and witnesses must be present before a notary public and provide the following information

  • Date the signatures in dd/mm/yyyy format
  • The Seller –
  • Signature
  • Printed Name
  • AND
  • The Buyer –
  • Signature
  • Printed Name
  • AND
  • Witness 1 –
  • Signature
  • Printed Name
  • AND
  • Witness 2 –
  • Signature
  • Printed Name

Step 7 – Once the notary public has witnessed all signatures on the form, the notary will complete the remainder of the form and affix their state seal

  • Make copies to provide to all that have provided a signature for record keeping
  • Give the original copy to the buyer
