Register a Trailer, Snowmobile, or Watercraft in Michigan

If you reside in Michigan or are preparing to do so and will purchase recreational vehicles or trailers, you will have to register all of these just as if you would register a car, in this state.

Where to Register – You may appear in person and present the appropriate documents to register any on or off-road vehicle. Find your local Secretary of State’s office.

Needed to Register – You may appear in person at any MI SOS office and complete your title applications (if needed) and register your recreational vehicle or trailer. A certificate of title is not required for a trailer that weighs less than 2,500 pounds but must be registered.

  • You will also need the following:
  • Title showing a change of ownership
  • Photo ID
  • Last registration, if any
  • A bill of sale
  • Hull ID Number if it’s a larger watercraft
  • Odometer Statement
  • Proof of insurance
  • Be prepared to pay all fees at registration

Once you’ve registered any of these items, you will receive the appropriate decals and instructions on where to legally place them on each vehicle.
