A cashier is a worker responsible for handling and recording transactions on behalf a business. This includes noting the item or items sold and accepting some form of payment. Cashiers are typically public-facing employees, but can also be internal, and may deal with sales in which payment is made at time of purchase, or with those made by entities with preexisting accounts.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Use a cash register and/or point-of-sales (POS) system;
  • Interact with customers;
  • Verify pricing for items or services;
  • Process refunds when necessary;
  • Wrap or package sold items;
  • Apply discounts when called for;
  • Keep counter or sales area clear; and
  • Maintain record of sales.

Qualifications

  • Good understanding of computation/arithmetic;
  • Friendly disposition;
  • Knowledge of business inventory;
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods;
  • Computer skills for POS systems; and
  • Attention to detail.
