A material handler is a worker who moves, stores, and documents the flow of goods and inventory. Material handlers will often work at a warehouse, but they may also find work at factories, ports, rail yards or large construction areas. Depending on the job and the handler’s training, material handlers may sometimes be responsible for hazardous or sensitive items. The rise of E-commerce has significantly increased the demand for material handlers over the last decade.

For hand laborers and material movers:

Duties and Responsibilities
- Add and remove products from trucks, rail cars, etc. for placement;
- Verify accuracy of order manifests;
- Document inventory for temporary storage;
- Move materials within warehouse or other storage area;
- Operate machinery, including forklifts and freight elevators;
- Input material transit data;
- Follow all relevant safety regulations; and
- Communicate with product vendors to address logistics issues.
Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent;
- Physical endurance (standing, walking, lifting);
- Ability to work nonstandard hours;
- Detail-oriented and capable of following extensive instructions;
- Inclination toward working as part of a team; and
- Familiarity with computers and basic data-entry software.
