A sales associate, also known as a retail salesperson, is an employee of a retailer, usually in a storefront. This role serves as the most direct and immediate public face of the retail company. The employee will represent their organization by providing a high level of customer service to customers. They assist customers with questions, concerns, and purchases.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Achieve sales goals;
  • Answer customer questions;
  • Assist customers with refunds and returns;
  • Cross-sell products;
  • Generate leads and close sales;
  • Greet customers to the store;
  • Help customers find specific products;
  • Maintain extensive knowledge of company policies and procedures;
  • Maintain extensive knowledge of company products and/or services;
  • Maintain the presentation of the sales floor, signage, and displays;
  • Operate cash registers and/or point of sale systems and process customer transactions;
  • Provide advice about products (if qualified);
  • Provide excellent customer service; and
  • Resolve customer complaints.

Qualifications

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods;
  • Basic math skills;
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Experience with point of sale systems a plus;
  • Familiarity with inventory processes;
  • Friendly;

  • Retail sales experience a plus; and
  • Understanding of customer service and sales practices.
