A Washington D.C. land contract allows one person to buy land from another person. The contract is a legal document that includes information such as the lot number, subdivision, and reference information recorded with the Office of the Surveyor, as well as the names and signatures of the parties giving and receiving title to the land. The transfer of land takes place when the contract, or deed, is recorded with the Recorder of Deeds.

Where to Record? (D.C. Code Title 42, Chapter 4) – After the closing, the deed must be recorded by the Recorder of Deeds. This can be done in person at the DC Office of the Recorder of Deeds (1101 4th Street, SW, Suite 500, Washington DC 20024) or electronically. The recording fee is $31.50.
