The Idaho Boat Bill of Sale a legal document used to show evidence of the sale, for a purchase or trade. This document will provide details with regard to the seller, buyer, the vessel to include odometer information and to provide proof of the change of ownership. This document will require notarization, therefore no signatures should be provided prior to all parties being present before the witness of a notary.

Register a Vessel

Before you’re able to operate a motorized boat in Idaho, it must be registered and part of the registration process is taking a boater education course, which is offered free of charge by the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation/Boating Education.

Where to Register – You may register with your local Boat Registration Vendor OR your local DMV

Needed to Register – There will be documentation required in order to title in Idaho. You may register your boat even if you are a non-resident as long as it is located in Idaho. Gather the following documents:

  • A boat title
  • A bill of sale or other proof of ownership
  • A completed Application for Certificate of Title
  • Picture Identification (driver’s license or state ID)
  • Completed Boating Education Certificate (if needed)
  • Be prepared to pay all registration fees at the time of registration

How To Write

Step 1 – Seller and Buyer – Download the document and provide the following information:

  • The Seller – 
  • Name
  • Driver’s License Number
  • Physical Address
  • City
  • State
  • AND
  • The Buyer –
  • Name
  • Driver’s License Number
  • Physical Address
  • City
  • State

Step 2 – Details – Provide the following information in the lines provided on the form:

  • Make
  • Length
  • Year (the vessel was built)
  • Hull ID Number
  • Registration ID Number
  • Odometer Reading (hours)
  • Title Number
  • Will a Trailer be included in the sale? (check yes or no)
  • If you answer Yes – Enter the Make and Year
  • Will an Outboard Motor be included with the sale? (check yes or no)
  • If your answer is Yes – Enter the Make, Year and Horsepower (HP)

Step 3 Trade/Purchase Price – Check the boxes that apply. Offer additional information where required (if applicable):

  • If the first box is selected, the seller is accepting monetary payment – Enter the worded dollar amount
  • Enter the dollar amount in numbers
  • Provide the date of which the parties have agreed that payment will be made in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Enter the date in which this document will be known as complete, in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • If the parties agree that payment will be made at a later date, enter the date in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Other – If different negotiations have been agreed upon by the parties, enter the description of the agreement (if more room is required add a sheet and attach it to the form
  • Check the box if the vessel/boat is a gift to the buyer
  • Check the last box if this will not be a sale, but will be a trade. Provide a brief description regarding the conditions in which the trade will occur between the parties

Step 4 – Seller’s Disclosure – The seller should carefully review the statements in this section:

  • Should there be any known defects with regard to the vessel/boat, provided a description into the lines on the form
  • If all signatories are present before a notary, the seller will then submit their signature, in agreement, on the “Seller’s Signature” line

Step 5 – Signatures – If all signing parties are before a notary public and have been identified by the notary, provide the following:

  • The Seller –
  • Signature
  • Printed Name
  • AND
  • The Buyer –
  • Signature
  • Printed Name
  • AND
  • The Witness –
  • Signature
  • Printed Name

Step 6 – Once the notary public has witnessed all of the signatures, they will complete the remainder of the form as required by law and will affix their state seal.

  • Make copies to provide to all signatories for their records
  • Give the original copy to the buyer
