Idaho Boat Bill of Sale Form

Updated February 16, 2024

An Idaho boat bill of sale formally records all details surrounding a private transaction of a vessel between two (2) or more parties, usually a seller and buyer. The sale document contains essential information regarding the vessel’s identification and mechanical condition at the time of sale, as well as the agreed-upon purchase price. An owner of a newly-acquired vessel must present a bill of sale to the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR) in order to prove their legal ownership and obtain a certificate of registration.

Signing Requirements – Both the buyer and seller must sign the document.

Registering a Boat

All motorized vessels and sailboats, whether power-driven or under sail, must be registered with the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR) before being operated on public waters. All registrations are valid through one (1) calendar year, expiring on December 31. Renewing can be done online via the IDPR’s Online Registration System, by mail, or in-person at authorized boat registration vendors or nearby county assessor locations.

Note: A private seller must report the transaction to the IDPR within fifteen (15) days from the sale date.

Where to Register

Newly-acquired vessels must be registered in-person with the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR) at participating Boat Registration Vendors, county assessors offices, or one of the many motor vehicle (DMV) offices.
