An Idaho motor vehicle bill of sale (Form ITD 3738) serves as evidence of a vehicle’s purchase and sale, legally binding the transfer of ownership between a buyer and a seller in the State of Idaho. A bill of sale is required upon signing over the title to the new owner. Once the transfer is set forth, the buyer may then utilize all documentation to register the vehicle under their name with the Idaho Transportation Department’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Required Forms

Odometer Disclosure Statement (Federal Form) – Required for any transfer of a motor vehicle less than ten (10) years old and under 16,000 lbs.

Release of Liability (Form ITD-3858)– Must be filed by the seller within five (5) days of the sale.

Registering a Vehicle

Upon the private purchase of a vehicle, the buyer will have thirty (30) days to register said vehicle with their local DMV office; out-of-state transfers must be registered within ninety (90) days. Registrations must be renewed once a year, and renewal applications can be submitted online through the Transportation Department’s Online Services.
