Odometer Disclosure Statement (Federal Form) – Required for any transfer of a motor vehicle less than ten (10) years old and under 16,000 lbs.
Release of Liability (Form ITD-3858)– Must be filed by the seller within five (5) days of the sale.
Registering a Vehicle
Upon the private purchase of a vehicle, the buyer will have thirty (30) days to register said vehicle with their local DMV office; out-of-state transfers must be registered within ninety (90) days. Registrations must be renewed once a year, and renewal applications can be submitted online through the Transportation Department’s Online Services.
Where to Register
All vehicles must be registered with the Idaho Transportation Department’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
Required Documents
- Bill of Sale;
- Odometer Disclosure Statement;
- Completed Application for Certificate of Title;
- Release of Liability (Form ITD-3858);
- Valid Idaho Driver’s License;
- VIN Inspection (for out-state-vehicle transfers);
- Registration Fees;
- Proof of Insurance (must be insured by one of these active insurance companies);
- Motor Vehicle Power of Attorney, if applying for a title with a county assessor’s motor vehicle office through the mail. This authorizes the County Assessor to sign the application for the owner.
