Registering a Boat

All mechanically-powered vessels must be registered with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (DNR). For a newly acquired vessel, its new owner must obtain a valid registration within 15 days of purchase. All new residents who wish to transfer their existing vessel’s registration from another state have 60 days to file the necessary paperwork.

Upon approval from the DNR, the registration will be valid for three years and expires on September 30 of the third year. Renewals may be processed online through the DNR’s Licensing System or by calling (866) 867-3542.
