Montana Vessel Bill of Sale Form

The Montana Vessel Bill of Sale is a legal document that will prove the legal sale and purchase of vessel/boat in the state of Montana. This document will also prove change of ownership. This form will require notarization.

Register a Vessel in Montana

If you’ve purchased a motorized boat or a sail boat longer that 12 feet in length, in the state of Montana, you will need to register the vessel prior to operation on Montana waterways. Any non-motorized vessel is exempt.

Where to Register – You may register your boat at any County Treasurer Motor Vehicle Office local to where you reside or you may register at any Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks location

Needed to Register – Regardless of where you choose to register, you will require the following documentation and information to register your vessel and to receive your required decals

How to Write

Step 1 – Seller and Buyer Information – Enter the following information:

  • The Seller – 
  • Name
  • Driver’s License Number
  • Physical Address
  • City
  • State
  • AND
  • The Buyer –
  • Name
  • Driver’s License Number
  • Physical Address
  • City
  • State

Step 2 – Vessel Detail – Enter the required information:

  • Make
  • Length
  • Year (the vessel was built)
  • Hull ID Number
  • Registration ID Number
  • Odometer Reading (hours)
  • Title Number
  • Will a Trailer be included with the sale? (check yes or no)
  • If Yes – Enter the Make and Year
  • Will an Outboard Motor be included with the sale? (check yes or no)
  • If Yes – Enter the Make, Year and Horsepower (HP)

Step 3 – Trade/Purchase Price – Check the boxes that are applicable to this transaction:

  • If the first box is selected, the seller will accept only monetary payment – Enter the worded dollar amount
  • Enter the dollar amount in numbers
  • Provide a date that the parties have agreed upon that payment will be made in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Enter the date in which this document will be known as, in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • If payment will be made at a later date, enter the date in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Other – If different arrangements have been agreed upon then enter the description of the agreement
  • Check the box if the vessel/boat is intended as a gift
  • Check the last box if this will be an even trade. Provide a brief description as to the terms of the intended trade

Step 4 – Seller’s Disclosure – The seller must carefully read the statements:

  • If, in fact, there are any known defects with regard to the vessel/boat, provide a description
  • If all paries are present before a notary, the seller may proceed with entering their signature in agreement on the “Seller’s Signature” line

Step 5 – Signatures – If all signing parties are before a notary public and have been identified, provide the following:

  • The Seller –
  • Signature
  • Print Name
  • AND
  • The Buyer –
  • Signature
  • Print Name
  • AND
  • The Witness –
  • Signature
  • Print Name

Step 6 – Once the notary public has witnessed all signatures, they will complete the remainder of the form as required by law and affix the state seal.

  • Make copies to provide to all signatories for their records
  • Provide the original copy to the buyer
