Boats that are motorized and 12 feet or longer must be registered with the state of Montana. Registrations are permanent, but the validation decals must be renewed every three years. Decal renewals can be processed through the Fish, Wildlife, and Parks office in person or online.

New boat owners apply for registration at their local county treasurer.
