The New Jersey General Bill of Sale is a legal document that is used, in most cases, between two private parties to prove the legal sale and purchase of personal items. The form will provide information about the seller, buyer, identifying numbers (if any) and other factors regarding the item(s) being sold. If needed, the form may prove the change of ownership. This document requires notarization and signatures by both seller and buyer as well as a witness if needed.

How to Write

Step 1 – Seller and Buyer Information – Both parties must enter the following:

  • The Seller –
  • Name
  • Driver’s License Number
  • Physical Address
  • City
  • State
  • AND
  • The Buyer –
  • Name
  • Driver’s License Number
  • Physical Address
  • City
  • State

Step 2 – Property Details – Enter any helpful descriptions and/or details and information regarding the item(s):

  • Details
  • Serial Number (SN) (if applicable)

Step 3 – Trade/Purchase Price – Check any applicable boxes that would pertain to this transaction:

  • Checking this box states that the seller chooses to only accept monetary payment– Enter the dollar amount in words
  • Enter the dollar amount in numbers
  • Enter the date the parties have agreed as to when payment should be made in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Provide the date in which the document will be known as by all parties, in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Should a later date for payment have been agreed upon by the seller and buyer then enter that date, in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Other – If some other agreement has been reached, provide any information describing any changes to the agreement
  • This box should only be selected should the “seller” choose to provide the item(s) as a gift to the “buyer”
  • Check this box if this is planned as an even-trade and describe the terms of the trade

Step 4 – Seller’s Disclosure – Seller must review all statements and disclose any known defects with regard to any item being sold or traded

  • When the seller has disclosed the information with regard to any known defects, they must then enter their seller’s signature in the line provided

Step 5 – Signatures – When all parties are present who will participate in signing the document, each party must provide the following information:

  • The Seller –
  • Signature
  • Printed Name
  • AND
  • The Buyer –
  • Signature
  • Printed Name
  • AND
  • The Witness – 
  • Signature
  • Printed Name

Step 6 – Notarization – The notary public, after witnessing all signatures, will complete the remainder of the form and affix the state notary seal

  • Make copies of the completed document
  • Give the original copy to the buyer
