Tax Status
The subcontractor will be obligated, before starting work, to identify themselves as an independent contractor by completing a W-9 and returning it to the contractor. This essentially means the subcontractor will be responsible for the payment of their employees (including any unemployment insurance), travel to the job site, materials, and to provide themselves with the necessary equipment to complete the job.
In the agreement, the parties may elect to pay themselves by the hour ($/hr) or a total amount for the entire job. If the latter is decided, the contractor will usually make a payment every week or month until the job is complete and in accordance with any timelines or schedules.
