A car sales receipt may be used to document the purchase of a vehicle at a dealership or for a private sale. The receipt will show an itemized list of the car, additional add-ons, sales tax, and any excise taxes. The receipt should only be given by the seller once payment has been received and the buyer may need the receipt, along with the bill of sale, for registration purposes at their respective Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office.
