Minnesota Security Deposit Demand Letter

Updated December 02, 2022

A Minnesota security deposit demand letter is a notice informing a landlord that they must immediately return a tenant’s security deposit. In almost all cases, Minnesota landlords are required to return a security deposit within three (3) weeks of the tenant moving out. An exception to this rule is if the tenant is forced to move due to the building being legally condemned for reasons other than the tenant’s willful, irresponsible, or malicious conduct (these cases require the landlord to refund the deposit within five (5) days). If the tenant does not receive the security deposit within the designated timeframe, the landlord may be forced to pay additional damages of $500 and twice the amount of the deposit including any accumulated interest.
