The Tennessee General Bill of Sale is a document that is usually utilized between two private parties for the proof of sale and purchase of personal property. The document provides information about the buyer, seller, identifying factors regarding the item(s) being sold and purchased. It also provides proof that there has been a change in ownership. How to Write

Step 1 – Seller and Buyer Information – Each party must provide the following:

  • The Seller –
  • Name
  • Driver’s License Number
  • Physical Address
  • City
  • State
  • AND
  • The Buyer –
  • Name
  • Driver’s License Number
  • Physical Address
  • City
  • State

Step 2 – Property Details – Provide information with regard to the item(s):

  • Details/ Descriptions
  • Serial Number (SN) (if any)

Step 3 – Trade/Purchase Price – Select any applicable boxes. Enter additional information where requested:

  • Check the box if the seller has indicated that he/she will only accept monetary payment – Enter the dollar amount in words
  • Enter the dollar amount in numbers
  • Enter a selected date as to when the parties have agreed that payment will be made, (in mm/dd/yyyy format)
  • Select the date in which the document will be known as (in mm/dd/yyyy format)
  • Should the parties agree that payment will be made at any later date, enter the desired date, (in mm/dd/yyyy format)
  • Other – If different agreements have been decided, enter a brief description
  • Check the box should this item or these items be intended as a gift(s)
  • The last box in this box would indicate that the parties have agreed on a trade. Enter a description of the terms (conditions)

Step 4 – Seller’s Disclosure – The seller must read the statements in this section. Enter any information regarding any known defects in the property

  • After reading the statements and entering possible defects, the seller may then provide their signature

Step 5 – Signatures – If all parties are present before a notary public, all must enter:

  • The Seller –
  • Signature
  • Printed Name
  • AND
  • The Buyer –
  • Signature
  • Printed Name
  • AND
  • The Witness – 
  • Signature
  • Printed Name

Step 6 – Notarization – Once the notary has witnessed all signatures, she or he will then complete the remainder of the form, to authenticate by affixing the state seal.

  • Make copies of the completed document for record keeping
  • Give the original copy to the buyer
