The Wisconsin Boat Bill of Sale is a legal document designed to provide proof that a legal sale of a vessel has been sold and purchased. Register a Boat in Wisconsin

In the state of Wisconsin, if one would wish to operate a motorized vessel on Wisconsin waterways, it must be registered. If the vessel is longer than 16 feet long, it must also be titled. If you’re visiting from out of state and your vessel it properly registered in another state, you may operate for up to 60 consecutive days without registration.

Where to Register – After you’ve gathered all of your documentation you may register in person at any of your local Department of Natural Resource Offices or you may mail your information to the address located on the registration application.

Needed to Register – Gather the following documentation:

  • You will require a completed a Boat Registration and Titling Application (Form 9400-193). Photocopy the application before mailing. This will serve as your temporary registration until your new one arrives in the mail
  • Mail application with all applicable fees to the address on the application. Or, if you prefer, drop off the application and payment of fees (located on the Boat Registration form, at any DNR office.

How to Write

Step 1 – Seller and Buyer Information – Each party must provide:

  • The Seller – 
  • Name
  • Driver’s License Number
  • Physical Address
  • City
  • State
  • AND
  • The Buyer –
  • Name
  • Driver’s License Number
  • Physical Address
  • City
  • State

Step 2 – Vessel Detail – Seller must enter the required pertaining to the vessel/boat:

  • Make
  • Length
  • Year (the vessel was built)
  • Hull ID Number
  • Registration ID Number
  • Odometer Reading (hours)
  • Title Number
  • Will a Trailer be included with the sale? (check yes or no)
  • If Yes – Enter the Make and Year
  • Will an Outboard Motor be included with the sale? (check yes or no)
  • If Yes – Enter the Make, Year and Horsepower (HP)

Step 3 – Trade/Purchase Price – Select the boxes that apply. Enter additional information if requested:

  • Check the box if only monetary funds will be accepted – Enter the worded dollar amount
  • Enter the dollar amount in numbers
  • Enter the date that payment will be made to the seller in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Enter the date in which this document will be known between the parties as, in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • If the parties have agreed that payment may be made at a later date, enter the agreed date, in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Other – If different arrangements have been made, provide a brief description
  • Check the box if the vessel/boat is intended as only a gift with no monetary exchange
  • Check the last box if this will be a trade. Provide a brief description of the trade

Step 4 – Seller’s Disclosure – The seller should carefully read the statements provided:

  • Record any known defects (if any)
  • Once complete, the seller may provide their signature

Step 5 – Signatures – If all signing parties are collectively before a notary public and have been identified, provide the following:

  • The Seller –
  • Signature
  • Print Name
  • AND
  • The Buyer –
  • Signature
  • Print Name
  • AND
  • The Witness –
  • Signature
  • Print Name

Step 6 – Once the notary public has witnessed all signatures, the notary public will complete the remainder of the form. They will then affix the required state seal.
