Laws

According to D.C. regulations, a landlord has 45 days after the termination of the tenancy to either return the tenant’s security deposit or send a letter expressing their intention to withhold the deposit for the purpose of repairing damages. Should the landlord choose to send a letter, they will have thirty 30 days to send the tenant an itemized statement of repairs covered by the deposit and any balance remaining.[1]
