Maine Security Deposit Demand Letter

Updated December 14, 2022

A Maine security deposit demand letter is a letter sent by a tenant to a landlord who has failed to return a security deposit. In cases where the tenancy is outlined in a written agreement, the landlord must refund the deposit within the period described in the agreement so long as the duration does not exceed thirty (30) days. When the tenancy is at-will (e.g., month-to-month), the security deposit must be returned within twenty-one (21) days from the expiration of the tenancy or the delivery of possession by the tenant, whichever is later. Failing to adhere to these regulations shall forfeit the landlord’s right to reserve any amount of the retained deposit.
