Michigan Security Deposit Demand Letter

Michigan Security Deposit Demand Letter

Updated December 02, 2022

A Michigan security deposit demand letter is a letter sent by a tenant to a landlord who has failed to deliver the tenant’s security deposit after the lease agreement ends. Michigan law states that landlords must mail the deposit to the tenant within thirty (30) days of the lease expiration. In addition to the deposit, the landlord must include a detailed list of any damages resulting in deductions of funds. The landlord’s failure to comply with these regulations shall forfeit their right to claim damages and leave them liable to pay twice the amount of the security deposit.

Note: Tenants must provide landlords with a forwarding address no later than four (4) days after they vacate the dwelling.
