An Iowa medical power of attorney is a legal instrument used to defer medical decisions to a trusted person should you be incapable of communicating for yourself. It goes into effect when your attending physician determines that you cannot make decisions or act on your own behalf.

“Durable Power of Attorney” Definition

“Durable power of attorney for health care” means a document authorizing an attorney in fact to make health care decisions for the principal if the principal is unable o make health care decisions in the judgment of the attending physician.[2]
