A school letter of intent is a cover letter to introduce an applicant to a committee reviewing school applications. A typical school letter of intent is comprised of a header, a salutation, the body, and the closing. The letter should include the applicant’s personal story and/or academic and extra-curricular achievements and accolades. This letter is key to an application, as it sets the tone for the rest of the documents within the individual’s application.

What is a Letter of Intent for School?

A school letter of intent, also known as a “statement of purpose,” is a cover letter of sorts that is attached to an individual’s school application. The contents of the letter of intent will vary depending on the applicant, the program or school to which they are applying, and the committee in charge of applications. Typically, the individual writing the letter can use this opportunity to get a little more personal with regard to their objectives, aspirations, and their life leading up to this moment. Another approach would be to highlight certain outstanding academic, scholastic, and/or extra-curricular achievements that might make the applicant stand out amongst the plethora of admission packages the admissions department receives. The admissions department takes many factors into consideration when determining whether an individual is a worthy candidate for the school. If the applicant can express through the letter a genuine interest in the school and can demonstrate the value both parties will gain from the individual’s admission, they will have a better chance at acceptance.

Dear Doreen Evans,

My name is Taylor Smith and I would very much like to attend the Flagstaff CollegeAmerica campus this coming fall. My family has always lived in Phoenix and I like the idea of staying close to my family as I continue my education. CollegeAmerica has a reputation of providing students with the career-focused education and personalized help that they need to begin a great career. For me personally, I’m interested in applying to the Cybersecurity & Networking program. I believe this is the perfect opportunity to delve deeper into the field of technology that I’m passionate about and increase the skills and talents that I have been honing throughout my secondary education.

I graduated in June of this year in the top 5% of my class. My grades in computer programming and repair, calculus, algebra 1 and 2, and statistics were all 90% or higher. I was part of boys track and cross country in all my years of high school. This past spring, I was honored to be one of the top eight finalists for Arizona boys cross country runner of the year award. Although CollegeAmerica does not have a cross country program, I still intend to maintain an active lifestyle and believe my competitive nature and willingness to work hard are strengths that are applicable to all facets of my future education.

I am very excited to start the next chapter of my life and am hoping that you can see that I am a committed and diligent student. I feel a school’s reputation and integrity comes from the merit of their faculty and student body. I would like to prove to CollegeAmerica that accepting me will be a positive addition to the college’s notoriety.

Best regards,
